After the game, Sharman received a commemorative volleyball. “What a journey,” Sharman said. “Thank you from the bottom of my heart. To every player who has ever put on the jersey, past and present, thank you for trusting me, for your work, your grit, and your love for this game. You are what makes this number special.”
Sharman continued, thanking her assistant coaches and fellow coaches over the years: “I could not have done this without you. Your hours, your loyalty, your friendship mean everything.”
She also thanked her Casper College colleagues, including administration, trainers, and support staff, for supporting the volleyball program “every step of the way.” She added, “And to my friends and family who have celebrated the highs and carried me through the lows, thank you for being my foundation.”
“Coach Sharman is very deserving of every win she has earned. Being one of the winningest active coaches in the NJCAA is a testament to the time, dedication, commitment, and love that she has poured into this sport,” said Kelly Wiedemann, assistant volleyball coach.
“(A) big thank you to Kelly Wiedemann for all of (her) hard work and taking the time to get everyone on this,” said Sharman, adding, “It truly takes a village to get to 700 career wins. I am so grateful to share this with all of you.”
In March 2021, Sharman reached 600 wins. She is the fifth-winningest active coach in the National Junior College Athletic Association.
“Being able to work for her has given me such a great example of the amount of work it takes to build a legacy the way that she has. Even more than the wins, what I admire most is the impact that she has had in the lives of her athletes,” Wiedemann said.
Sharman has served as head coach of the Thunderbird volleyball team since Aug. 13, 2001. She also serves as assistant athletic director and instructor at Casper College. Before coaching in Casper, she spent five seasons at Colby Community College in Colby, Kansas, leading her teams to two Region VI playoff appearances.
As an athlete, Sharman was a two-sport star, playing basketball and volleyball at Mid Plains Community College in North Platte, Nebraska. She credits Sally Thalken, one of the all-time junior college coaching greats, with teaching her the trade. Thalken coached volleyball at MPCC from 1981 to 2014, amassing 921 career wins.
During her time at MPCC, Sharman was recruited to play volleyball for the NCAA Division II Fort Hays State University Tigers in Hays, Kansas.
She has coached eight NJCAA All-Americans, 83 All-Region IX performers, and 62 Academic All-Americans. Seven of her Casper College teams have earned NJCAA Academic All-America honors.
