A rare opportunity to learn about raising fish in Wyoming will take place Wednesday, Sept. 23, during the September Wildlife Series event at the Werner Wildlife Museum.
Fish Production Insights at the Wildlife Study Series
Beginning at 6 p.m., Lars Alsager, Speas Fish Hatchery superintendent, will offer an insider’s look at fish production and operations at the Dan Speas Fish Hatchery. The hatchery raises a variety of species, including rainbow, West Virginia Strain rainbow, Eagle Lake rainbow, brook, brown, and Bear River cutthroat trout. During the Wildlife Study Series presentation, Alsager will discuss hatchery history and modern stocking techniques.
The hatchery was built in 1957 and began full production in 1959. It produces about 50% of the fish raised by the Wyoming Game and Fish Department. In addition to trout, the hatchery raises kokanee salmon, tiger muskie, catfish, bluegill, and walleye.
The Werner Wildlife Study Series is held in the Africa-Arctic Room of the Werner Wildlife Museum. The family-friendly event is free and open to the public. For more information, call 307-235-2108.
The Werner Wildlife Museum, located off the Casper College campus at 405 E. 15th Street, is free and open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
