Wheeler Honored With Scully Award

Gretchen Wheeler, Casper College communication instructor and director of the college’s Center for Learning Through Service, was honored recently with the Judith Bailey Scully award.

“Gretchen was chosen because of her longtime commitment to excellence in teaching, her invigoration of student learning through service projects, her mentoring of ‘generations’ of new faculty over the years, her efforts to build up the substantial forensics program, and a myriad of other positives,” said Erich Frankland, the 2010 Scully winner.

“I will never forget the day I first met Gretchen,” said Paul Marquard, last year’s winner. “The first characteristic that stood out about her was her laugh. I cannot recall a more jovial and contagious laugh. On more than one occasion she was instrumental in helping my engineering students learn to communicate better. I have found her to be a person passionate in her dedication to teaching students, promoting student success with service through learning, and to the welfare of Casper College,” he said.

“I am truly honored and humbled by this award, but it reminds me to strive each day to crusade for our students and provide the best education each day both in and out of the classroom,” said Wheeler.

The yearly award, first presented in 2005, was established by Marlan O. Scully in honor of his wife Judith “… to honor faculty who demonstrate academic excellence as characterized by Judith’s outstanding accomplishments as a Casper College and University of Wyoming student,” said Paulann Doane, director of the Casper College Foundation.

Bailey Scully won honors while attending Casper College and took her degree from the University of Wyoming only three years after graduating from Natrona County High School.
