Dr. Joseph Monfre selected as 2025 Distinguished Alumnus

Dr. Joseph Monfre is this year’s Casper College Alumni Association 2025 Distinguished Alumni Award winner.

Monfre was nominated by Tiffany Scott, Casper College respiratory therapy instructor and director of clinical education. “I have had the privilege of working closely with Dr. Monfre not only as a surgeon at Banner Health but also as the co-medical director of the Respiratory Therapy Program here at Casper College. I can personally attest to his outstanding achievements, unwavering dedication, and exceptional contributions to the health care field and Casper College,” Scott said.

According to Scott, Monfre recently began working with the Casper College Emergency Medical Services program “ … to come up with different ways to be a collaborative partner to support the learning of the students in that program,” she said.

After graduating from Casper College in 1997 with an Associate of Science degree in biology, Monfre attended the University of Wyoming, earning his Bachelor of Science in zoology and physiology in 1999, his Bachelor of Science in medical microbiology in 2000, and his Master of Science in pathobiology in 2003, He received his M.D. in medicine from the University of Washington in 2010.

Monfre then spent the next six years in residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, first in general surgery from 2010-2012 and then in cardiothoracic surgery from 2012-2016. From 2015-2016, he was also the administrative chief resident in the department. He received his board certification from the American Board of Thoracic Surgery in 2017. Currently, he is a surgeon at Banner Wyoming Medical Center.

In addition to his board certification, Monfre holds the following certifications: Tactical Emergency Casualty Care for Law Enforcement and First Responders, TECC-LEO; Tactical Combat Casualty Care, TCCC; Advanced Trauma Life Support, ATLS; Basic Life Support, BLS, for Healthcare Providers; and Advanced Cardiac Life Support, ACLS.

Monfre is the chair for the Division of Perioperative Services at Banner Wyoming Medical Center, the medical director for the Casper College Respiratory Therapy program, the medical director for Camp X Special Operations Training, the medical director for respiratory therapy at Banner Wyoming Medical Center, all in Casper, Wyoming, and the medical director for training programs for T3i Inc in Cornado, California.

The Distinguished Alumni Award winners are nominated by their peers and chosen by the Casper College Alumni Association board of directors.
