Discover the fastest dinosaur at March Saturday Club

“Dino Derby” is the topic for the Tate Geological Museum’s Saturday Club for March. Participants will learn how to determine the speed of dinosaurs on Saturday, March. 1, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Russell Hawley, education specialist, will show students how to discover if the Velociraptor was really the fastest dinosaur and if an Apatosaurus could outrun a Tyrannosaurus rex. “We can do more than guess at the answers to these questions,” said Hawley.
Participants will learn how scientists calculate an animal’s hind limb index to understand its top sprinting speed. “Then we’ll run an imaginary footrace on paper, pitting different species of dinosaur against each other to see which one would win the 50-meter dash,” Hawley said.
Following the dino derby, students will look at other aspects of dinosaur life and make their own food webs to show who was eating who when dinosaurs roamed the earth.
Saturday Club is free and open to children ages 7-14. The Tate Geological Museum is located on the southern end of the Casper College campus; look for the life-size T.rex bronze near the Tate or call the museum at 307-268-2447.
