The Casper College Workforce Development program is offering a course for those wanting to become a clinical medical assistant or CMA, to support physicians performing functions related to the clinical responsibilities of a medical office.

During the three-month program, students will learn how to prepare patients for examination and treatment, routine laboratory procedures, diagnostic testing, technical aspects of phlebotomy, and the cardiac life cycle.

Topics covered during the program include phlebotomy, pharmacology, use and administration of medications, taking and documenting vital signs, cardiology, including proper lead placements, professional workplace behavior, ethics, and the legal aspects of health care. Finally, students will take the National Healthcareer Association Exam, which is included in the cost of tuition.

Those certified will qualify for entry-level positions in the medical field, which can result in jobs that offer higher wages and benefits. In Wyoming, the average starting salary is $38,730, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics 2023 wage data external site.

The class is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, March 11, and finish on June 12. It will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 9:30 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. “These times for the class were chosen to accommodate full-time students and those who may be employed and following an 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday work schedule,” said Erik Christensen, workforce training specialist.
