A new OLLI class that celebrates the magic and poetry of piano music will be offered on Saturday, Sept. 29 from 4-7 p.m.

The class, “Poets of the Piano: Night at the Theater,” will be taught by Nathan Carterette. According to Carterette, the piano was the dominant form of music making for 150 years. “Composers made piano versions of their works for people to play at home,” he said.

Participants will learn how composers “… arranged complex music that was written for a full orchestra, for 10 fingers, and how the art of transcription developed the art of piano playing and its technique,” said Carterette.

In addition to the lecture, lively music will be performed on the piano featuring transcriptions of opera, ballet, and incidental music for plays and compositions by Wagner, Liszt, Prokofiev, and Mendelssohn.

The deadline to register for “Poets of the Piano: Night at the Theater” is Wednesday, Sept. 26. To register for the class, go to www.caspercollege.augusoft.net or for more information contact Lifelong Learning Specialists Vicki Pollock at 307-268-2097 or vpollock@caspercollege.edu or Jeaneece Schmidt at 307-268-2099 or jeaneece.schmidt@caspercollege.edu.
