The Casper College Advanced Geographic Information Systems class will give three poster presentations on Wednesday, May 8 beginning at 4 p.m. in Room 225 of the Walter H. Nolte Gateway Center.

According to Jeff Sun, GIS instructor, the poster presentations will “… showcase the great GIS mapping projects students have worked so hard on this semester.” The three “awesome” projects to be showcased are: “How to Create a Story Map,” “Using Drones to Map the Campus in 3D,” and “Mapping and Cataloging Septic Systems and Water Wells in the Dempsey Acres Area.”

The first poster presentation will showcase how to use maps and GIS data to tell a story. In this case, the particular “Story Map” will outline all of the past and current mapping projects that have been done on the Casper College campus.

“Using Drones to Map the Campus in 3D” will look at the use of drones to collect aerial images of several buildings on the Casper College campus in an effort to build a 3D world of the campus. “The high-resolution imagery and data a person can collect from drones is exciting to work with. Using that data, the students built a great 3D map and fly-through of the campus that I think everyone will be impressed with,” said Sun. In addition, the students will showcase the fleet of drones that the college has acquired over the last several years.

The final presentation, “Mapping and Cataloging Septic Systems and Water Wells in the Dempsey Acres Area” will look at a project that students worked on with the Natrona County Health Department and the City of Casper’s GIS department to catalog and map all of the septic system permits in the Dempsey Acres area near Casper. “The students were also able to acquire locations of water wells and some water well testing data and show the relationship between locations of septic systems and water wells. This relationship is showcased in the GIS by incorporating the variable of ‘time’ and automating the GIS to show how testing data changes over time in the Dempsey Acres Area,” Sun noted.

The poster presentations are free and open to the public. The Nolte Gateway Center is located on the Casper College campus.
