Written almost 90 years ago, Karel Capek's R.U.R. anticipates issues and problems that we are only now beginning to face: artificial intelligence, man's dependence on technology, the manufacture of "designer" organisms, and stem cell research, among other things. All of this forces us to ask: What does it mean to be human? And what will be the fate of humanity when our technology develops beyond our ability to control it?
