Originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Dave is a contemporary percussionist currently residing in Casper, Wyoming, where he is the percussion instructor for the Casper College School of Fine Arts and Humanities, as well as President of the Wyoming chapter of the Percussive Arts Society. As an active member of the percussion group Clocks in Motion, Dave is committed to performing classic percussion ensemble literature and chamber music, as well as commissioning new repertoire within these areas.
In the orchestral field, Dave is the principal timpanist/percussionist of the Wyoming Symphony Orchestra. In the past, he has worked with acclaimed conductors including Kenneth Kiesler, Michael Haithcock and H. Robert Reynolds. Dave has been a sub for the Lansing Symphony Orchestra, the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra, and the former principal percussionist and timpanist for the Livingston Symphony Orchestra. He has had the privilege of performing in Carnegie Hall in 2008, and can be heard on the album, “Raise the Roof” (Equilibrium Records).
In addition to western classical music, Dave is also active in music from various other cultures. He is the former president and member of the Brazilian Samba group Vencedores, located in Ann Arbor, Michigan, as well as a former member of the University of Michigan Arabic Ensemble. Dave has studied instruments of the Middle East, including riq, doumbek, tar, and various other hand drums with Ian Ding. In addition, Dave has studied tabla with Todd Hammes, Dan Piccolo and Elliot Beck.
Dave is also a prominent music teacher. Currently a faculty member at Casper College, Dave teaches private lessons, percussion ensemble and world music in the School of Fine Arts and Humanities. During the summer, Dave is on faculty at the New England Music Camp in Sidney, Maine, where he instructs middle and high school students in solo, chamber, orchestral and jazz music.. While living in Ann Arbor, Dave taught general music and band at the Huron Valley Catholic School. He is the former assistant director of the MPulse Summer Performing Arts Institute, as well as a former assistant director of Novi High School’s competitive indoor drumline.
In addition to performing and teaching, Dave also writes and arranges music. Since 2007, Dave has been a staff arranger and composer for the Mt. Lebanon Percussion Ensemble. His arrangements and compositions have been performed by groups throughout the United States, including the University of Michigan and the University of California-Los Angeles. In addition, his arrangements have been featured at conferences and summer festivals, including the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association Conference, National Conference on Percussion Pedagogy, National Percussion Festival, Juilliard Summer Percussion Seminar, Idyllwild Music Festival, and MPulse Summer Percussion Institute.
Dave received a Bachelor of Music degree in Percussion Performance and Music Education from the University of Michigan, and a Master of Music degree in Percussion Performance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dave is a recipient of the Paul Collins Fellowship, which is awarded to outstanding graduate performance majors and determined by a committee of performance faculty. His primary teachers include Michael Udow, Joseph Gramley, Anthony Di Sanza, Ian Ding, Brian Jones, Cary Kocher and Pete Siers.
